Fourteen pre-school services in Mayo received their Healthy Ireland status at an awards ceremony celebrating the second annual Healthy Ireland Smart Start Awards in Athlone Institute of Technology. The award recognises pre-schools across Ireland that have participated and achieved Healthy Ireland status. Mayo’s early childcare providers now have a cumulative 18 Smart Start Awards (including the four awards received in 2016).

Recently-installed air monitoring devices deployed in the city revealed last evening that a level FIVE times the normal rate of air pollution was exceeded on Tuesday evening when the city was engulfed in clouds of smoke from the devastating wildfire at Cloosh Valley in Connemara.

The fire in Cloosh Valley near Oughterard, which has destroyed more than 1,000 hectares of forestry is believed to have originated from deliberately set gorse fires, which subsequently spread into Coillte owned forestry.

Helicopters, the fire brigade, and the Air-Corps, are being deployed to fight the massive fire at Cloosh Valley forest, near Oughterard, that is threatening thousands of acres of forest, moorland and wildlife, having already caused extensive damage.

Tree Week runs from March 5-12. Organised by the Tree Council of Ireland, it has been running since 1985 in association with Coillte, local authorities, and sponsor Applegreen.
